According to a new WHO report, 2.6 million people died from alcohol in 2019.
, which looked broadly at global substance use for people 15 years and older, shows over 3 million people died from substance use in 2019 and 400 million people live with substance use disorders, which can have a number of negative health impacts.
"On a global scale, is one of the most widely used drugs. Definitely having a negative impact on health," Dr. Jennifer Ashton, ABC News chief medical correspondent, said onRates of alcohol deaths have declined since 2010, but the number of people who are dying from alcohol consumption "remains unacceptably high," according to the report.
"We have to really come to terms with the fact that there is no safe amount of alcohol and particularly for women," Ashton said. "When you talk about breast cancer, even light alcohol consumption, less than one drink a day, associated causally with a 15% increased risk of breast cancer ... that is stark."
