A look at Cadillac’s technological wonders then and now.
Plenty of tailfins, chrome, and big grilles adorned our coverage of Cadillac over the past 75 years, but don’t let all that bling blind you to the groundbreaking tech that lay underneath so many of the brand’s models. Super Cruise and magnetorheological suspensions are relatively recent innovations that deserve a shoutout, and forare significant in their own right, but only the 1949 Cadillac has the special distinction of being our first.
He narrowed the field to three finalists: Ford, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac. Bond passed on the Ford because it offered “nothing new or outstanding from an engineering viewpoint.” On the flipside, Olds and Cadillac both sported new V-8 engines with an overhead-valve setup. It would be two years before we finally put Caddy’s new engine through our regimen of instrumented testing for a “Motor Trials” story . The subject of that test was 1951 Cadillac Series 62 sedan, and although its handling characteristics left much to be desired, we were tremendously enamored with what was under the hood. Cadillac improved the “Hydramatic” automatic transmission for 1951, but the 331-cubic-inch OHV V-8 was untouched from 1949, churning out 160 horsepower .
Robert Robin of San Marino, California, is the proud owner of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 Sedanette featured here and agrees that the overhead-valve V-8 under the hood is transformative. And he should know: Robin’s car collection also includes six other Cadillacs and La Salles, including a 1941 Cadillac convertible coupe with the old flathead V-8. “I’m quite pleased with the ’49,” Robin said. “It’s much easier to drive; it has more power and great acceleration. Gets better mileage, too.
