The science-fiction genre is home to some of the most thoughtful and sophisticated narratives ever put to screen; its speculative nature allows for compelling commentary and its genre packaging can prove an excellent means for communicating complex philosophical or scientific ideas to mainstream audiences.
11 Source Code The time loop thriller Source Code sees deceased Army captain Colter Stevens living out an 8-minute repeating simulation of a real terrorist attack on a commuter train. The film ends with Stevens saving the train, and his handler leaving the simulation running, so that Stevens can continue living out the simulated existence with the woman he loves.
8 eXistenZ Director David Cronenberg’s surreal, grotesque sci-fi movie eXistenZ ends with the film’s protagonists, Allegra Geller and Ted Pikul, awakening in a church, having just tested out a hyper-realistic virtual reality game as part of a focus group. Everything that happens prior, including the two characters going into a VR game, was inside this wider game.
5 Annihilation Annihilation is both a gripping journey through a cosmic horror landscape and a chilling portrait of the effects of trauma and grief on the psyche. The “shimmer” can be understood as both an alien entity and the metaphorical embodiment of the grief that has afflicted Lena after the presumed death of her husband, Kane. At the film’s end, Lena and Kane reunite, but are unable to tell if they are really themselves, or if they have been fully replaced by the shimmer.
