In the wake of a pandemic that shuttered restaurants big and small, the question felt especially appropriate. I began to think about restaurants I'd miss if they were no longer here: places that serve more than meals, that act as repositories for our memories; gathering places for communities; spaces we show out-of-towners to say,"This is what my city has to offer."
There was the neighborhood pizza joint in Brooklyn Heights that served their pies with jars of roasted garlic and pickled peppers. It was a place where one relationship both blossomed and fizzled. There was the shawarma stand in Oman that started the spits around 4 a.m. and served until 3 a.m. I loved the toum-smothered chicken from my first visit and it was the last place I ate before moving back to the States.
I began to wonder what places meant something to my colleagues. Where does a media critic go when the screening lets out? Where does a travel reporter take his culinary journeys? So, I turned to reporters, columnists and editors, asking them to share the restaurants that were important to them.
