Second Lady Usha Vance and the National Endowment for the Arts revealed the winners of the Bookmark Design Challenge, a contest for K-8 students to illustrate what America means to them. The three winners from California, Florida, and Georgia will have their artwork displayed at the Great American State Fair and other America 250 events. The challenge encouraged young artists to creatively express their views on America's past, present, and future.
The Bookmark Design Challenge , a national competition inviting students in grades K-8 to create original hand-drawn bookmarks depicting what America means to them, has announced its winners.
Second Lady Usha Vance, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), selected three winning designs-one from each grade band-that showcased exceptional creativity, artistic skill, and thoughtful engagement with the theme of America's past, present, and future. The winners, representing California, Florida, and Georgia, will be recognized at a special event during the Great American State Fair, scheduled for June 25 through July 10, 2026, in Washington, D.C.
Their designs will also be featured in commemorative activities related to America's 250th anniversary, including the Second Lady's 2026 Summer Reading Challenge and other events hosted by the Office of the Second Lady and the NEA. Second Lady Vance emphasized the importance of art in the nation's history, noting that each submission beautifully reflected America's history through the eyes of young citizens and artists.
She congratulated the winners and thanked all participants for sharing their talents to celebrate this special anniversary. Students are encouraged to continue engaging with patriotic themes through upcoming initiatives like the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge. The competition highlighted the role of youth creativity in expressing national identity and heritage, with the winning artwork serving as a vibrant representation of how younger generations perceive the country's legacy and future
