Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has thrown her support behind a pooch that wore a "tax the rich" outfit for a New York City dog parade.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) replied to a tweet shared by Run For Something co-founder Amanda Litman that showed a dog wearing an outfit similar to a controversial dress she wore at this year's Met Gala.
The October 23 post read: "A perfect AOC homage at the Thompkins Dog Run Halloween Parade (sic)."
Progressive Democrat Rep. Ocasio-Cortez replied: "The skirt is perfect #TaxTheRich."
As of Sunday morning, Her quote tweet was liked 21,300 times and retweeted on more than 1,090 occasions.
The pooch wore the outfit for the annual Tompkins Dog Run Halloween Parade on Saturday, where dog owners show off their creative and adorable costumes.
They compete for titles that include scariest costume, most punny costume, best DIY costume and best senior dog costume, among others.
The outfit worn by the dog was inspired by the head-turning white gown worn by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez at the Met Gala that had "tax the rich" emblazoned on in red.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's gown, made by Brother Vellies designer Aurora James, caused a stir online when she appeared at the star-studded event in September.
Writer Ilana Kaplan called Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's dress "simply iconic" in a tweet that was shared 8,800 times.
But, conservatives appeared less than impressed with the stunt with political writer Brent Scher posting on the social media website: "It would have been one thing for @AOC to wear the tax the rich dress to #MetGala as a protest of the absurd event. But nope, she's all in with the stars walking its red carpet."
Donald Trump Jr. also said: "What makes @AOC a bigger fraud? The 'tax the rich' dress while she's hanging out with a bunch of wealthy leftwing elites or the lack of masks after spending the past 18 months as one of the biggest authoritarian mask Karens in the country?"
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez later hit back at criticism of her outfit choice in a series of tweets where she told detractors "the medium is the message."
She also used the opportunity to tell supporters that "the time is now for childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all" before she reiterated her original message of "tax the rich."
The New York Democrat has pushed for a more progressive agenda since she campaigned to enter the House of Representatives.
She recently hit out at Democrat Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.VA) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) for pushing back against President Joe Biden's ambitious Build Back Better agenda, which included massive spending proposals.
