Ever since the release of season three of Succession in 2021, we've been hungry for more. More Greg and Tom; more betrayal; more vacation weddings. So, congratulations are in order for all us Succession fans, since HBO Max has confirmed that the show will be returning for a fourth season AND they've already started filming. Here's everything we know about Succession season 4.

Will there be a Succession season 5?

As of 22nd February 2023, the team behind Succession confirmed the show won't continue after the fourth season. Creator Jesse Armstrong told The New Yorker:

"I’ve never thought this could go on forever. The end has always been kind of present in my mind. From season 2, I’ve been trying to think: Is it the next one, or the one after that, or is it the one after that? We could do a couple of short seasons, or two more seasons. Or we could go on for ages and turn the show into something rather different, and be a more rangy, freewheeling kind of fun show, where there would be good weeks and bad weeks. Or we could do something a bit more muscular and complete, and go out sort of strong. And that was definitely always my preference.”

He continued "This succession story that we were telling is complete…but the feeling that there could be something else in an allied world, or allied characters, or some of the same characters —that’s also strong in me."

A Roman spin-off? Here. For. It.

What's the plot of Succession season 4?

Nicholas Braun, who plays Greg Hirsch, teased his upcoming storyline with Matthew Macfadyen's Tom Wambsgans in an interview with Deadline, telling them that "Greg shifts into another gear" as "he and Tom have a new frequency" in season four.

"Greg apparently has "so much release. He's like 'take me to the dark side.' Playing Greg, he's a fear-based guy, always questioning whether he's doing right or wrong. It feels like the next chapter is 'Let's go!'"

The official synopsis for Succession season 4 reads: “In the 10-episode season four, the sale of media conglomerate Waystar Royco to tech visionary Lukas Matsson moves ever closer. The prospect of this seismic sale provokes existential angst and familial division among the Roys as they anticipate what their lives will look like once the deal is completed. A power struggle ensues as the family weighs up a future where their cultural and political weight is severely curtailed."

Speaking to Variety before the release of season 3, creator Jesse Armstrong spoke about the longevity of the show and broke all our hearts with his answer. When asked how long Succession might go on for Armstrong replied, "I don't want to say," adding, "All I know is there’s a promise in the 'Succession' title, and it can’t go on forever."

Look, we get it. It's the right thing to do, but it still hurts to hear.

When was Succession season 4 confirmed?

We can absolutely confirm that Succession season 4 is happening. Not only did HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi confirm the show's renewal in a press release, but the official Succession Twitter account also tweeted the news, showing a short teaser of clips of home movies from (presumably) the Roy's childhood along with the caption, "Renewed for Season 4."

While this won't come as much of a surprise to fans of the show, it's still good to get that definite confirmation since plenty of shows are cancelled right from under our noses despite their big fan bases.

HBO has also announced that filming has already started for season four of Succession, confirming that there will be ten (!) episodes to look forward to.

Who will star in Succession season 4?

Thankfully, all the big names are returning for season 4, including Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Alan Ruck, Matthew Macfadyen, Nicholas Braun and J. Smith-Cameron.

Plus, as with most new seasons we can probably expect some new additions to the cast list, and if there's a chance of it being the finale season might there be some big and exciting names in there?
