Alleged Parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe returned to the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, with civil society calling for his release.

Mafe faces charges of arson, theft and terrorism.As civil society calls for Mafe’s release, Advocate Dali Mpofu joined his legal team in his second court appearance and read from a medical report that the latter had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The report also said that Mafe should undergo a 30-day mental evaluation at a psychiatric hospital.

He threatened to go on a hunger strike if his bail hearing was delayed any further. He was returned to Pollsmoor Prison until a bed becomes available at the Valkenberg Hospital, which is currently full.The case has been postponed to February 11.
