The case could redefine how work is valued for women at supermarkets across the country with similar suits pending against J Sainsbury, Tesco, Wm Morrison Supermarkets and Co-Operative. The total value of the claims is about £8bn, according to lawyers at Leigh Day, who act for the workers. Michael Newman, a lawyer at Leigh Day, said Covid-19 should be focusing everyone on the importance of key workers, who work in stores every day.

“While we respect the rights of retail workers to bring this case, we fundamentally disagree with its premise and will continue to make our arguments clear,” Asda said in a statement ahead of the hearing. “Retail and distribution are two different industry sectors.”
