MPIYAKHE DHLAMINI | Sars lost more than R1.7bn in revenue from the alcohol and cigarette bans in just over 29 days in April according to Kieswetter.

Image:As South Africa heads into level 3 of its Covid-19 lockdown on June 1, President Cyril Ramaphosa has promised we will see most of the economy re-open, except the"sale of tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes and related products".

Indeed, some 90% of the respondents to a survey published last week by researchers from the Research Unit on the Economics of Excisable Products at the University of Cape Town's School of Economics say that they have continued to buy cigarettes since the lockdown began, despite the ban on the sale of tobacco products.Coronavirus watch

Therefore, the ban on sales has served only to enrich smugglers, illicit traders at the expense of SA's law-abiding citizens and the public purse. This is revenue that will be permanently lost to the fiscus and which South Africans will have to fund in future .The economic consequences run the gamut from large companies losing revenue and making fewer investments, to small informal traders who had cigarette sales as their most reliable source of income.

CelesteCamero18 In fact one could argue that export of tobacco products is in fact a sale? This is proof that her argument and reasoning relating to health issues as being the primary reason for the ban is rubbish. Why is she allowing the sale to other countries who coincidentally also have C19?

KhofuMoahloli Supporters of these illegal cigarettes are the ones to blame & not the lockdown laws. They're no different from those who buy stolen goods🤷🏾‍♂️

Well done ! Rediculous !

Different newspaper different billions.😂

mac_ct Jis but we drink and smoke a LOT. Spose with our government we need to be permanently dronk

Good riddance, we've been suffering from secondary smoking. Smokers have no respect for other people.

And how much was saved on unnecessary deaths, damaged cars and all the nonsense from alcohol. Stop this stupid propaganda

...just put it on the zuma / dlamini-zuma credit cards. They can afford it with all they stole from SA....

Dlamini🤠🤠🤠🤠🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔

Great story

Tito Mboweni has to readjust his budget ASAP...I feel for him as after the ban is lifted the black market price will fall and smokers now have their suppliers ..no need to buy taxed cigarettes

The sad Capitalism. They have the odesity to exclaim tax losses resulting from products that eventually impair productivity at the least. Shouldnt we be improving productive capacity or tax collection in other products to eventually not rely on tobacco tax? Cheap stunt by SARS

How many lives was the lost revenue going to save from this pandemic?

These Zuma's and their hatred for the economy...

But the home executive still has a job!

Forget that... I'm ready for June!!

Now you know why the fuel price hike next week when everybody goes back to work. And don’t believe the BS about “rate of exchange” and the oil price!

Unathi_Kwaza AND zuma/ mozi made 2 billion!!!?

imagine that money could go to helping people who lost their jobs but we fucking opening churches... 🤡🤡🤡

Lives wiĺl be recovered but the covid casualties are gone for good.

So what ? They have slave workers whom they know they will increase more tax to recover lost amount . Easy! Don't vote ANC to power again! A big mistake was made to crown this party victorious of the emerged number of winning votes jeeeeer🚮🚮🚮

Unathi_Kwaza And who else does the tobacco ban enrich?

🤷🏿‍♂️

Its R900 a carton now. For cheep brands. It looks like “local” manufactured smokes. The blackmarket is thriving
