Tired of voting and frustrated with the ANC, Zandspruit residents deserve better
It’s a cloudy and rainy morning, and the residents of Zandspruit, Johannesburg, are up and about – some already braving the cold to make their way to work while others are on the clock at their makeshift stalls that line the dusty streets.
With less than a week to election day, it’s rather unusual that there’s not a single election poster in sight. For 68-year-old entrepreneur Mziwoxolo Ndaba, this “does not bother me because I will not be voting”.Having voted for the first time in the 1994 national elections, “with the hope for a better life as a black South African.” Ndaba said the governing party had disappointed him, and that he was unbothered by the upcoming local government elections because “there are more important things to worry about”.
As customers flocked to his busy stand, Ndaba multitasked between serving customers and ensuring that his vetkoeks were cooked to perfection. The government wants us to fend for ourselves while they live expensive lives at our expense as citizens
Mziwoxolo Ndaba“Do you see all these people busy coming to buy? They give me more support than the government. The government wants us to fend for ourselves while they live expensive lives at our expense as citizens. So why would I continue to vote?” he asked. headtopics.com
“When elections are happening, I will be here, selling, doing what is important to and for me. So the ANC must continue doing what is important to it because, clearly, South Africans are not prioritised.”A previously loyal ANC supporter, Ndaba said: “I am old. I have voted for the ANC over and over in the past years. It is enough now.”

Sharing Ndaba’s sentiments was 47-year-old father of four, Johannes Thobagale. Like Ndaba, he was hard at work in his own way.Having endured unemployment for more than 10 years, Thobagale told City Press that he had been left with no choice but to go through “the piles of rubbish that pervade Zandspruit”.
“How can I vote when I know what the outcome will be? I have voted for the ANC for as long I can remember. In 1994, this party gave us hope. Look at where I am,” he said, turning back to collect whatever food and recyclables he could get his hands on. headtopics.com
READ: ‘How do we social distance when our shacks are right on top of each other?’Thobagale also first cast his vote for the governing party in 1994, with the hope of a better life.He said: “Is this the life that the ANC wants for its people? Why waste my energy by going to vote when the same people who get elected do not put the same energy into ensuring that those who voted for them are living good lives? I am not asking for luxury, but I am asking for better. I am tired.”
Rebecca Mazinyo (64), who has lived in Zandspruit since 2004, was despondent over her “unbearable living conditions” and questioned her loyalty to the ANC. However, she saw no other party to vote for but the “party of Mandela”, adding that she was aware that the ANC is but a shadow of its former self.
The problem is I know no other party but the ANCRebecca Mazinyo“I have voted for years and I have always voted for the ANC, but it has become difficult. The problem is I know no other party but the ANC. It was the first party I voted for in 1994 when I first cast my vote. So what other options do I have?
“When I first voted, I voted for Mandela, and that is who and what I know.”Mazinyo’s main frustration was government’s failure to provide houses. She stays in a two-roomed mud house with visible cracks in every wall, as well as a roof made from corrugated iron that is caving in. headtopics.com

I might as well be outside because I cannot call this a house,” she said.“I don’t think a simple place to live, even an RDP house, is too much to ask for. We have been asking for years and all we have heard are empty promises.
“I will reluctantly vote for the ANC even though they do nothing for us as the citizens of this country. We are suffering. We need housing. As the older generation, we deserve better.” Read more: City Press »
