If, after three years, the rightful owner can't be found, the money may be used for socially responsible investments with commercial returns. But a claim on it will always be honoured, even after that point.

South Africa has R33.5 billion worth of unclaimed assets as of 31 December 2021, according to ASISA.

The money is owed to policyholders, beneficiaries, investors, and heirs who are either not aware of policies or have not claimed for unknown reasons. By 31 December 2020, R22.7 billion had been paid to on 77,790 policies, thanks to tracing efforts, ASISA said.According to Lightbody, ASISA member companies cannot cancel an individual’s right to claim an unpaid amount, irrespective of how long it takes for them to claim.
