Swimming, surfing and fishing banned in Durban due to raw sewage in water | GroundUp_News

An internal Transnet letter circulated on Thursday said the City had taken out damaged pumps from the affected sewage works, pending the arrival of spares. As a result, approximately 720 000 litres of raw sewage is now flowing into the harbour each hour, reads the notice.

"This is a serious marine and environmental disaster," said contest organiser, Tasha Mentasti, who heads the surfing division of Accelerate Sport. "I have never seen the city in such a diabolical state," added Mentasti, who grew up surfing on Durban's Golden Mile. The severe sewage discharge follows massive amounts of rubbish on Durban's streets after municipal workers embarked on an unprotected strike to protest against the employment of scores of people claiming to be Umkhonto we Sizwe veterans when there was no vetting of their credentials.

GroundUp_News Where is the Mayor? Apart from the picture at KSIA. rinmor

GroundUp_News Surely there should be charges levied against the municipal manager for this 'shit'.

BoknRoll GroundUp_News And now the ANC has to sort it out. Ha ha ha. There will be no more swimming in clean water in Durban for a looooong time. Good bye tourism.

GroundUp_News I'm sure the mayor will make a statement once someone finds her. She's been missing since the floods.

GroundUp_News Thank the MYANC for literally swimming in shit, the Western Cape, has over 30 blue flag beaches and marinas. Just saying...

GroundUp_News And they still voted for the ANC, what an uninformed, uneducated country they have created.

GroundUp_News What is thatraw sewage
