Unions are demanding an increase of R1,000 a month but Sibanye-Stillwater says it cannot afford that.

JOHANNESBURG - A strike appears imminent as the stand-off between unions and the country’s largest mining employer continues.WATCH:The National Union of Mineworkers, Solidarity, Uasa and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union are demanding an increase of R1,000 a month. But, Sibanye-Stillwater says it cannot afford that.

It has offered increases of R480 a month in year one, R570 in year two, and R600 in year three for different categories of workers.Artisans and officials are being offered increases of 4.1 percent in year one and 4.7 percent in years two and three.What the unions are demanding would push it up to as much as R2.5-billion.
