Communications deputy minister Pinky Kekana told parliament's portfolio committee on communications this week that the definition of TV licences was in its current form archaic and should be amended to include other electronic devices.

Deputy communication minister Pinky Kekana wants video-on-demand users to start paying for TV licences to benefit SABC.The government has proposed plans that would see people who don't have TV sets but enjoy video on demand entertainment services via mobile devices paying for TV licences.

The state uses funds from TV licences to bankroll the SABC, which last year reported a net loss of almost half a billion rand. Kekana said collecting TV licence fees from non-TV users would help boost the state-owned entity's struggling balance sheet.

SABC in current state is complete rubbish and must reform and align with expectations for digital disruption instead of raping us in daylight with these nonsensical TV licenses. There are so many people willing to help, including myself on their transformation.

Yes SABCPortal, the licences are as archaic as your business model. Drop the failed licence and launch your own pay service.
