A Spar shop owner has been told to pay close to R12m to staff for labour law breaches. File picture.A Spar owner has been ordered to pay almost R12m to his staff for making “unlawful” deductions and not complying with national minimum wage laws.
The awards, the department said in a statement, compel the franchisee to comply with various orders issued – and pay all complainants a total of R11,935,478. He has 14 days to make the payments.

ThembarifumoS We have to also investigate how many of the staff are legal having work permits. Spar employs majority of Zimbabwean workers. That is an easy way to beat the system. Employ people who are not on the system and they cannot make noise because they are not citizens

A lot of companies are doing the same you work for 5 days and you must work a Saturday for free because you work for the public no pay no transport u must get to work
They should check all retail stores who dnt even pay minimum wage to their employees and they let employees work for years as casuals especially pnp
Not only Spar most of the places they dnt follow the right procedures if u raised your problem the Boss will find e way to fire you
I so wish labour law could visit where I work since Metal industry failed us as workers.
