Solitary confinement in SA prisons violates human rights: inspectorate

According to a report on solitary confinement in SA prisons, 'Inmates sit alone in a single cell for 22 to 23 hours a day without stimulation or human contact. There is an hour of exercise in an isolated exercise cage and food is provided through a slim postbox sliver.' File photo.Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services has reiterated its stance on solitary confinement in SA prisons, calling it a violation of human rights.

“At both these centres, inmates sit alone in a single cell for 22 to 23 hours a day without stimulation or human contact. There is an hour of exercise — not with other inmates, but alone, in an isolated exercise cage,” it said. Despite the facilities housing the most dangerous and violent inmates, the JICS said it remained deeply concerned about the harsh affect of solitary confinement.

SA needs a referendum on the benefits & rights of inmates versus those of victims where more tax money needs to be spent in terms of counselling, rewards and whether isnt it fair that inmates MUST till the land to produce their own food as opposed to supplies..

Maybe it's high time JICS leave their air conditioned offices & well secured electric fenced compound & engage with ordinary victims of crime to better understand the pain and trauma of human rights abuse at the hands of criminals...Iyoo SAfrica...
