Social development minister Lindiwe Zulu has admitted that terminating relief programmes, including the R350 Covid-19 social relief of distress (SRD) grant, will increase hunger, exacerbate social and political stress and slow down economic recovery.

Zulu was responding to a parliamentary question posed by the EFF about the implications stopping the SRD grant for poor South Africans.

Groups such as the Black Sash, #PayTheGrants, the Institute for Economic Justice and The Studies in Poverty and Inequality Institute said in a joint statement: “Income support for millions of destitute people has been cut off, leaving them to face a Covid-19 third wave without any means to afford food and other basic necessities. There is no justification for terminating the Covid-19 grant.”

Zulu said 10 million applications were received for the relief grant, and studies confirmed “that the relief measures have made significant impact on the livelihoods of not only those receiving the grant, but also those in a household of a grant recipient”. “It is expected that with the withdrawal of the last portion of the relief package, whilst in the third wave of the pandemic, more households and individuals will become vulnerable to hunger.”

tessie18 Zulu, are you suggesting R350 is enough to feed a person for a month? While you live on your millions?

The same ills were there even before covid.

Unbelievable isnt it...how a government with trillions in its coffers cannot come up with apt stimulus packages for its citizens to be self sufficient. Because there's no political will & creativity, the easiest thing is to give hand outs & retract them at inconvenience times

How is she going to recover this money from foreigners?

People vote for these clowns, so keep on struggling 🤡🤡

No, it will affect their votes,

She was told what to say but can’t defend, that’s why she can never agree to partaking in a debate

So what is your plan Ginger ? People are startving out here.

Countries are still giving out stimulus packages and incentivizing small businesses. South Africa’s leaders take from the poor and give to themselves!

R350 is a fucking joke…

Yes because its now less money for the anc to loot

No plans to sustain either

Terminating R350 will increase hunger

What is a R350 ,compare with other countries ?

But MP's are struggling to make ends meet with 100k per month.
