When a gay Zimbabwean man fled to South Africa, seeking refuge, he encountered further abuse and homophobia

In a short film by Carl Collison, Robert is a gay Zimbabwean man who fled to South Africa hoping to make it his home. Instead, he faced homophobic home affairs official, abuse by other gay men and the difficulties of navigating the Covid-19 pandemic as a sex worker in a foreign country.

Robert speaks with candour about fleeing his homeland, his life in South Africa and his hopes for the future. He is part of a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer refugees and asylum seekers who fled Zimbabwe fearing persecution. They recently formed the South African-based organisation, Zimbabwe LGBTIQ+ Crusader to get section 73 of Zimbabwe’s Constitution, which criminalises same-sex relations, repealed.

Crusader members marched to the Zimbabwean consulate in Cape Town on 12 April and handed over a petition demanding that the government and parliament remove or amend section 73, and that Zimbabwe respects, observes and promotes the rights of LGBTQI+ people. This film was commissioned by the GALA Queer Archive and sponsored by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung with funds from the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of the Federal Republic of Germany. The content of this short film is the sole responsibility of the GALA Queer Archive and Carl Collison and does not necessarily reflect a position of RLS.

Opinion: South Africans were short-changed on Ramaphosa’s first day at the Zondo commission | CitypressThe first of four scheduled days on which President Cyril Ramaphosa had been set to appear before the state capture commission of inquiry was a huge let down. Particularly for concerned South Africans who had expected him to be put through the wringer. Cyril takes SAns for fools. And ZC is making a mockery of itself. Why is Cyril not been tackled on his roles in the so called capture that he's been at the center from Codesa to date? What the hell is going on here? Uqinisile Mntungwa ayikho lendaba yale commission
