Having successfully hoofed Jannie de Beer into the stands, Frans Steyn now faces the next challenger in the series to determine the most clutch Springbok goal-kicker.

Now, Steyn faces Pat Lambie, who made his Test debut aged 20 against Ireland, coming on in Dublin as a replacement midway through the second half to score his first international points moments later, converting a try by Gio Aplon.

Lambie, whose versatility meant he could slot in easily at flyhalf, centre and fullback, played in 56 Tests and two Rugby World Cups before being forced into retirement due to the effects of multiple concussions. He is remembered for his calmness under pressure, like in 2014 when the Bok playmaker held his cool to slot a long-range winner against the All Blacks at Ellis Park. The Boks raced into a 21-13 half-time lead thanks to a Handre Pollard brace to go with one of the tries of the year finished off by Francois Hougaard.

But, the All Blacks fought back in the second half and thought that Dane Coles’ first Test try had done enough, as it gave the visitors a one-point lead going into the final minutes of the match. However, a high tackle from Liam Messam on Schalk Burger – spotted by the TMO – gave Lambie a chance to win it with a penalty from more than 50 metres, and he nailed it to give the Boks their first win over the All Blacks since 2011.
