Johannesburg - The South African National Editors’ Forum says it is concerned following the arrest of a community journalist who voted twice with an intention to “test” the IEC’s fraud prevention system.

Mare had posted a video of himself on social media on May 8 claiming that he was on his way to vote again after he noticed that the ink on his thumb was easily removable. Sanef claims Mare’s intentions were not sinister and that they were meant to test the system and highlight irregularities and failures to prevent people from voting twice.

“The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga tracked down Mare and the voter on Friday. Both appeared in the Baberton Magistrates Court on charges of contravening Section 88, voting more than once, Section 89 intentionally making a false statement and Section 90 infringement of secrecy of the Electoral Commission Act, 1996.”

Unethical period!! U don’t test poison by sipping one

Voting twice we all know it a crime how can we test a crime coz we have been voting since 1994

That journalist should be charged handed harsher sentence as deterrent for others in future. What journalist did got absolute nothing to do with investigation but tempering with election and intention to cast doubt on credibility. I'm all for investigative journalism but not this

Maybe when JMPD arrests me for Speeding in my Porsche I should just tell them I was “testing it”.....they will let me go neh

So to test the fraud prevention you commit a crime? Seriously Is that how foolish some journalists are

He did not have legal authority. Cant go and buy drugs and say how easy it was.

Speeding 260km/h to test traffic speed cams efficiency, assaulting someone to test their pain endurance, escaping from lawful custody to test prison security. In sum, you can't argue a (noble) 'motive' to avoid criminal liability, you can only do so in mitigation of sentence.

If they were testing the system they should have stopped as soon as they were given the ballot papers and not gone on to commit a crime. The moment you remove cash from a cash register you've committed a crime and should be prosecuted even if the till was opened.

So SANEF is promoting a crime. Whats next journalist are going to rob a bank and say they were checking if police will arrive.

When ANC members support their 'alleged corrupt' leaders the media calls them out. But now they are busy supporting a criminal. Bunch of hypocrites

He actually proved conclusiy that it was possible to multi-vote. It exposed a serious flaw in the system and one that was gladly abused by ANC and EFF voters. He actually did not vote the second time, but spoiled the ballot on purpose.

Is this not just a case of sanef protecting their own by hiding behind good intentions?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. He broke the law, throw the book at him. Too long has journalist been under the impression that they are above the law.

Surely the journalist could have found away to prove the point with out comiting a crime.

testing ..yeah right

Any thief can simple say they were testing security systems, would that be OK? Test are conducted during a testing phase, on an official voting day wena you go run your own tests. He/she committed fraud and must face the consequences

I need to go test the law nami yaz😂😂😂

everybody claimed to have tested the system. They all committed crime.

Taking investigative journalism a little bit too far

He broke the law

who must be arrested?
