Sandwich #FoodPorn is the best trend since sliced bread

Sandwich food porn is taking over your social media feeds, and with pictures like Jason Bakery's 'kimcheese toastie', we get it.What exactly constitutes a sandwich? According to Merriam-Webster it is “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between” but, for now, let’s stick to foods made with flat slices of bread.

We have our very own line-up of sandwich superstars here in South Africa. Giles Edwards from Le Tête’s deep-fried fish sandwich is probably one of the most Instagrammed in SA. The “kimcheese toastie” from Jason’s Bakery in Cape Town is also a strong contender. It is made with house kimchi, emmental cheese, mozzarella and parma-style ham, topped with a happy fried egg, on their 66% sourdough rye.

The new Tjing Tjing Torii in Cape Town has an entire section of their menu dedicated to the Japanese milk bread sandwich — it's inspired by Japanese street food and department-store food halls. Options range from pork katsu, lemon krautchi, tonkatsu sauce and kewpie mayo to egg, kewpie mayo, togarashi and sprouts.
