SACP remembers Joe Slovo 27 years on

Slovo was the most influential white member of the African National Congress and its chief military strategist.

At the time of his death, on 6 January 1995, Slovo was SACP national chairperson and a member of the party's central committee and political bureau. Slovo was appointed minister of Housing after South Africa’s first non-racial democratic general election held in April 1994. The South African Communist Party will commemorate the 27th anniversary of the death of Joe Slovo. SACP General Secretary Blade Nzimande will deliver the party’s statement at Avalon Cemetery next to Slovo's tombstone.
