SA Tourism acting CEO Sthembiso Dlamini says the decision by some countries to ban travel to and from the country is unjust and rushed.

Dlamini says this will further derail recovery efforts in the sector.

"We don't think it's justifiable at all. We just think that key source countries acted very quickly in terms of putting us on the red list, as we applaud our scientists for working very hard in discovering this new variant," she said."A lot of discussions should have happened before they put us on those red lists.

"In actual fact, a lot of work we've done in the past few weeks has seen a lot of travelers getting interested in traveling back to SA, airlines flying back into SA."
