South Africa has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases over the last two weeks, but it remains unclear whether the country is entering the fifth wave. | nickymccain

During a briefing on Friday morning, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said there had been a continuous rise in infections over the past two weeks, with new cases clustered in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. These three provinces accounted for around 85% of all new cases.

However, the authorities remain uncertain if the spike in Covid-19 numbers is the start of the fifth wave or simply a resurgence caused by increased travel during the Easter long weekend and other religious holidays. While no new variant has been identified, the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa has identified two new lineages of the Omicron variant. These have started to dominate tests over the last two weeks, said the network's Dr Richard Lessells.

However, the country is yet to breach 30% of the cases recorded in the previous peak, which is why the authorities are hesitant to say the surge in case numbers is the start of a new wave.

nickymccain I was scammed through Bitcoin couple of months ago, I started hating Bitcoin until I was introduced to _ambreymarcus1 , and I gave Bitcoin trading another try, I successfully withdrew R85,000 after two weeks of trading, am so grateful _ambreymarcus1 thank you.

nickymccain The most important statistic is the number of COVID hospitalisations and subsequent deaths. If these numbers are low and health facilities are not overwhelmed, then what's the fuss? The authorities are not providing these statistics because there is an ulterior motive at play.

nickymccain Authorities are gonna lie either way
