A new study by a global research and lobby group shows that organised crime is rising rapidly in SA in 10 of 14 'criminal markets'. Organised crime is a threat to stability and to the country's democratic institutions, says the study. | politicsblahbla

Organised crime is rising rapidly across SA with dire implications for the economy and the country's stability, a global research body reported on Wednesday.

Director of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime Mark Shaw described rising organised crime as"an existential threat to SA's democratic institutions, economy, and people. It often lies behind and connects seemingly disparate criminal incidents we see occur every day." On Wednesday, GI-TOC published an in-depth study of 15"embedded and inter-connected criminal markets", indicating an alarming rise in extortion, kidnapping, organised robbery, organised violence, corruption, theft of critical infrastructure, illegal mining, taxi industry-related crime, wildlife and fishing crime, cybercrime and economic and financial crime.
