Ramaphosa apologises to voters, vows councillors will do better
The ANC’s election manifesto launch held in Tshwane on Monday was characterised by apologies and promises from party president Cyril Ramaphosa.
Before Ramaphosa spoke, alliance partners Cosatu and the SACP also pledged their support to the ANC through speeches by Cosatu president Zingiswa Losi and SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande. Although Cosatu has not seen eye-to-eye with the ANC-led government over a number of issues – including salaries for civil servants – the labour federation decided that there was no better alternative to the ANC in these elections.
Ramaphosa promised: This evening we pledge, to you the people of South Africa, that we will do better. We have not always done the best that we were meant to do.“We have not always put the best people in positions of responsibility. Too often, we have been slow to act when our public representatives and leaders committed wrongdoing, when they abused their position or failed in implementing the mandate that you gave them,” he said.
Ramaphosa promised that the ANC would continue rooting out corruption in its ranks, including accelerating the implementation of the controversial step-aside guideline which has led to the suspension of party secretary-general Ace Magashule, among others. headtopics.com

Our promise to you is that we will do better to serve our people in every municipality and deliver better services. While we have good policies, we recognise that we must improve our performance.“Leadership is often weak and there is insufficient engagement with local communities.”

“This [new system] is to ensure that every person who is placed in this crucial leadership position in ANC-led municipalities has the experience, capability and commitment to fulfil that responsibility.“Many municipalities are confronted by corruption and mismanagement which divert crucial resources needed to meet the needs of the people. headtopics.com

RECLAIMING TSHWANEThe ANC, which lost control of Tshwane in 2016, is hoping this can be reversed in the upcoming local government elections to be held on November 1.The city has been led by the DA for the past 5 years despite many unsuccessful attempts by the ANC to regain control of the metro.

I have no doubt our manifesto will have a major impact. headtopics.com
Ramaphosa explained that Tshwane residents had experienced a number of issues since the DA coalition took over in 2016 and promised that this would be changed if the ANC is given the opportunity to govern again. He said residents had experienced service delivery woes, including water cuts, which had made it difficult for families to go about their lives.
“We come to you today, and call on you to come out and vote for the ANC so that we can again govern here in Tshwane and in many other towns and cities.“We ask this so that we are able to put the programme of social and economic transformation back on track. We have come a long way in our young democracy, but much remains to be done,” he said.Read more: City Press »
