take a close look at the brutality and repression in eSwatini and examine its implications for the region.

South Africa and other SADC countries have enormous influence over eSwatini. So why do they not use it when conflict in that country recently claimed between 34 and 80 lives? A new report from the Campaign for Free Expression highlights how King Mswati III has ramped up repression, using soldiers to deal brutally with protest, and blocking much media coverage. Even when two South African journalists were held and tortured, little was said.

Bheki Makhubu is an eSwatini journalist with more than 30 years’ experience. He is the editor and publisher of The Nation monthly magazine. In 2014, Bheki was arrested and charged with contempt of court for publishing articles critical of eSwatini’s judiciary and spent 15 months in prison. He started his career as a sports reporter at The Times of Swaziland in 1988 and rose to edit its Sunday edition at the age of 24.

In October 2014, while in prison, Bheki was awarded the CNN Multi-Choice African Journalist of the Year for Press Freedom. A year later, in October 2015, soon after his release, he was also awarded the Southern African Human Rights Defenders Award in Kampala, Uganda jointly with Thulani Maseko his co-accused.
