SA captain Temba Bavuma has said there is a lot they must improve on after their disappointing display with the bat in their five-wicket loss to Australia in the opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup on Saturday.

The Proteas were put in to bat by Aussie captain Aaron Finch after he won the toss and the top order collapsed spectacularly with the exception of Aiden Markram, who scored a fighting 40 off 36 as they reached an above average total of 118.

“From a batting point of view, it was not according to plan and we have a got a lot there that we need to improve on,” said Bavuma as he reflected on their overall performance. To put SA's poor performance into perspective: Markram and Rabada top-scored with respective scores of 40 and 19 and the rest of the batting line-up combined for 53 runs.

T20 Cricket World Cup: Same old Proteas or renewed hope? - The Mail & GuardianOnly a successful Cricket World Cup performance will see the Proteas finally banish their ‘chokers’ label. With all due respect to the current team, they are not the best that South Africa has to offer, many of our best players have been sidelined or are no longer available. So No, not the same old Proteas or renewed hope, just us participating at an international tournament. I started with R3000 and in 5days I was credited with R25,500 excluding my R3000 that's over 8x my startup capital. Imagine how much you will make with a higher startup capital. Thank you PackSheriff The very first match is a clear indication that sport and politics don't go hand to hand.

Yes it's disappointing to lose the 1st match...but we'll grow amd learn from this, there's 4 more matches to come...I think every team will lose at least 1 match... We're used to such presentation by them. On warm up matches they're brilliant and always disapoint when it matters.
