The Red Devils were without the services of Jadon Sancho and Harry Maguire through injury, as Marcus Rashford was called up on to join the attack on the night.

Chelsea should have been ahead when N'Golo Kante slipped Kai Havertz through on goal on 28 minutes, however the German forward failed to beat David de Gea in a one-on-one situation. It was more of the same in the second half but Chelsea had to wait until the hour mark for the breakthrough when Havertz flicked James' cross into the path of Marcos Alonso, who sent a first-time volley past De Gea.
