The six-month campaign, whose planning started in December, is driven by Prasa and the department of correctional services, is intended to restore the rail infrastructure ahead of the resumption of services in some corridors. While the participants will not be paid they will receive a stipend of between R1 750 to R2 500 per month to cover food and transport costs.

If government wants to reduce unemployment, why does it recruit prisoners to do work that should be done by the unemployedMKMVA president Kebby Maphatsoe told City Press: “We condemn the move because there are so many people who are unemployed, including the youth, women and military veterans. “The campaign is ill-informed and there is no serious decision to deal with unemployment. Rehabilitating prisoners cannot be done at the expense of unemployed people and law-abiding citizens,” he said.

Nxumalo said Prasa was making a direct contribution to the prisoners’ rehabilitation mandate of the department and this covered the re-integration of people. “This is a community initiative that involves parolees and probationers and not inmates. The project is mainly to empower parolees and probationers with skills for employability, job preparedness and successful reintegration,” he said.

The process deliberately targets a sector of the vulnerable groups, which are prison members who are being reintegrated into society, in this instanceNdlovu added: “The process deliberately targets a sector of the vulnerable groups, which are prison members who are being reintegrated into society, in this instance.”

That's great work instead of keeping them idle, they should participate in national duties

For what fuck off nothing train will ever run threr again

Why are ANC leaders rewarding criminality at the expense of law abiding citizens, this should not be allowed.

1759 ain’t enough. It’s a phucking mess.

Then potholes please

Another opportunity to loot 😏

Chain gangs - good 👏

SouthAfricansP1 here we go...more trains gonna get stolen 🙄

It's about time!!!!

SouthAfricansP1 It is very Important to publish times, dates, areas where they will be working to protect the general public in case there's escapes!

Come to think of it 🤔 this would be a lesson to upcoming criminals

JobsGuaranteeProgramme will ensure that unemployed youths do not get funny criminal ideas so that they do those jobs NxesiThulas khazimoloi RonaldLamola LindiweZulu6 DrDavidMasondo give this and many other tasks to out of schools task for the R1 350 per month

About time they wash and sleep and feed on the state ticket in jail its about time they work

Prasa is a joke, they have stopped informal traders from operating at their stations and they are not considered

Is it?

Can you guys extend the coverage area to include your parks particularly your township one even going further to clean police stations and health facilities such as your clinics and hospitals

At last. Something worthwhile is to be done. Too early to be pleased?

It’s about time...prisoners should be set to work all over the country AND NOT PAID! They get free board and lodging paid for by the taxpayers!

Unemployed youths would need to be paid... And we are currently in a recession, government and it's institutions should be doing everything to save on costs

It's only fair.

They can finally earn a living like everyone else. Imagine spending 10 yrs studying, eating and living for free

I’m conflicted because even though I understand the plight of the unemployed youth, parolees also have to be assimilated back into society & projects such as this help them & society. We truly need the economy to grow & create more job opportunities for all.

We need youth employment not prisoner exploitation. This could be a very good start to reduce poverty. PresidencyZA

Why the use of 'prisoners' in the headline? If they are out on parole, then they are 'parolees.' According to our Constitution, we are equal before the law & even parolees need a chance once they have served their sentences. These people are occupying railway lines legally.

BLACKBEAUTY8371 I wouldn’t - Mbalula has failed dismally

Why 'Prisoners' & not 'Unemployed Youth'

They should render those services free of charge...

Motheo2009 I thought I would hear human rights activists screaming at the top of their voices, this must be a sick joke the apartheid government used to do this to prisoners so now we are going back to that, is it right now for prisoners to work for nothing and is it human?

It is OK, they are also youth.

Finally

They must remove them we don't care if is a prisoners or what as long as those people must be removed

Quite right, the 4crs live for free.

Motheo2009 Great move , they should work for free
