SOWETAN | As we commemorate Black Wednesday today, we ought to be mindful that attacks on media freedom are less about the media itself than they are attempts to create a non-transparent and disempowered society.

On this day 43 years ago, the then corrupt and violent apartheid government banned newspapers, journalists and political formations, which represented the voices of dissent .
