London - Farmers are breeding super-sized pigs weighing up to 500kg in an attempt to tackle a pork shortage.
China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of the meat but prices are up by almost 50% compared with a year ago as herds have been ravaged by African swine fever. Farmer Pang Cong, based in China’s south-west Guangxi region, is at the forefront of efforts to breed larger animals. His biggest so far weighed almost 500kg – the same as a large adult male polar bear. Farm pigs are typically around 125kg.
