Prisoners at Barberton Maximum B Correctional Centre in Mpumalanga have accused authorities of exposing them to the risk of contracting the Covid-19 by failing to provide protection and follow regulations.

Prisoners at Barberton Maximum B Correctional Centre in Mpumalanga have accused authorities of exposing them to the risk of contracting the Covid-19 coronavirus by failing to provide protection and follow regulations.

“There are people who are sent to work outside, and when they come back, they tell us that they were only screened for Covid-19 and nothing else was done to protect them. Our lives are at risk,” said a prisoner who spoke on condition of anonymity. He explained that healthcare teams were on site and were armed with appropriate personal protective equipment , which included goggles, gloves, masks and gowns. Healthcare teams were rendering services to distress cases and monitored those likely to develop acute respiratory challenges, Nxumalo said.

“Inmates going out for work are issued with PPE; this includes Barberton. Overcrowding does remain a challenge in some of our centres, hence we transfer inmates to centres with no overcrowding during this period. The intention is to spread inmates evenly and reduce numbers where the situation becomes more risky,” Nxumalo added.
