OP-ED: Called by G-d By Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein

Certain moments in history are critical. G-d gives the opportunity to great leaders to play a role in writing history by rising to the calling and challenge of the moment. Not every leader is given the opportunity to make history in its most profound sense.

No blessing can come to South Africa until morality and integrity are restored to government. The prophet Isaiah makes this abundantly clear when he confronts the corruption of his own generation: “Your princes are rebellious and associates of thieves; each of them loves bribery and pursues payments. They do not render justice to the orphan; the grievance of the widow does not come to them.” orphans– the most vulnerable in our society – that suffer most.

Restoring morality and integrity means prosecuting the corrupt. It means members of government viewing their official positions as a calling and mission to improve the lives of the good people of this country. This is the central vision which should inform every decision that is made. How the cabinet is constructed. How budgets are allocated. How salaries and benefits are decided on. How contracts are awarded. How people are hired.

Op-Ed: Xenophobia erodes South Africa’s leadership potentialPresident Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, scheduled to coincide with Africa Day on 25 May this year, intends to highlight ‘government’s commitment to advancing the African agenda and to strengthening ties between South Africa and its neighbours’, according to The Presidency. However, the xenophobic outbursts in April a month before the national elections – and the challenges to responding appropriately to the crisis highlights the difficulty of fully integrating this message into government policy.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: SA Reserve Bank holds rates, signals a cut on the horizonThe South African Reserve Bank kept the repo rate, the main lending rate, on hold as expected at 6.75% on Thursday. Two out of five members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted for a cut, and the statement signalled the next move will likely be downward. This is largely because the deplorable state of the economy has put a lid on any demand pressures that could reignite inflation.

OP-ED: The Christchurch Call could potentially be used to clamp down on legitimate political dissent in AfricaEighteen countries, including Senegal, have endorsed New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s ‘Christchurch Call’, aimed at curbing the online spread of extremist and terrorist material. But the call holds dangers for Africa, where the risk of platform harms have too often become a justification for shutting down the internet. Social Justice Warriors seldom consider the broader consequences of their whining.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: Moderate CPI data supports case for SARB to hold rates — and maybe talk about cutsConsumer inflation in South Africa braked slightly in April 2019, supporting the view that the Reserve Bank will keep rates steady at the Thursday 23 May meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee. Given that inflation remains subdued because of weak demand and anaemic economic growth, there may be a case for the bank at least to contemplate when a cut may be on the table.
