The PSL held its first press conference of 2022 on Wednesday morning. Expectations were that there would be updates on the matter involving Kaizer Chiefs’ failure to honour two league fixtures last month, but there remains many unanswered questions with PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza only saying that “the matter is now with the legal department” during the televised virtual media event.
The PSL will complete a second full season without any fans. Khoza all but confirmed that the season would end without the return of spectators. Last October the league piloted the return of fans with the MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.Since then, the league has been dead silent on the matter of fans. Khoza said it would be too expensive to hold games with fans and comply with Covid-19 regulations.
“The rules say we can only have 2 000 people. This means we can only allocate tickets to our stakeholders and we will have nothing left for the fans. The costs of hosting a game will also be too much. Some teams would need to spend up to R500 000 or even R1 million on a high-category match,” he said.Four teams comprising of players from different clubs will take part in the inaugural DStv Compact Cup. The new “viewers’ choice” tournament will take place over the last two weekends of January.
The players will get to choose two of the following training programmes: Coach education, project management, facility management, business innovation, media officers, social entrepreneurship, merchandise management and event management.
