Nathan Sinkala – who boasts winners' medals in both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup – has set his sights on a return to continental football with Stellenbosch FC next season.
Having narrowly avoided relegation from the DStv Premiership last season, Stellenbosch have emerged as a surprise package in the league this time around and currently occupy third place in the log standings. The Cape-based outfit have been one of the standout performers in the competition this term and started the campaign with an impressive 11-match unbeaten run, which was only ended in November following a defeat to Orlando Pirates.
"This season, our target was to reach the top eight and we started well," Stellies' star midfielder Nathan Sinkala tells."The unbeaten run was a big boost and although we lost to Pirates, we are still on track towards our main target. "It won’t be easy and there will be games like that, but we just have to continue fighting. In football, such things happen but you just have to forget about last season and the lost matches, and continue in the way we started this time."While the club remains on course to achieve its targets, Sinkala has set his sights higher and hopes to help the club qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup; a competition he previously won during his time with TP Mazembe.
"That’s my dream," he adds when asked if continental qualification is on the cards."It would be really nice. Like the team, I also set myself personal targets and my target is to be part of this Stellenbosch team going forward and hopefully playing in the Confederation Cup..."
