Former president Thabo Mbeki has paid glowing tribute to his Zimbabwean counterpart, Robert Mugabe, at a memorial organised by the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, calling him a “fellow combatant” who had made a massive contribution to the liberation of South Africa.

Mbeki told a packed Durban City Hall that Mugabe had backed the ANC “from day one” of becoming Zimbabwean prime minister in 1980 despite the fact that the governing party had not worked with Mugabe’s Zanu-PF for the previous 15 years.

“The message is very clear: one of the people… that we should always value as one of the combatants for the liberation of South Africa was President Mugabe,” Mbeki said. “Indeed we opposed it strenuously. We are saying that the Zimbabwean people have the right to determine their own destiny,” he said.

The backlash over the corruption charges that were laid against Zuma ahead of the party’s Polokwane conference in 2007 saw Mbeki, who lost a bid for a third term against Zuma, himself being recalled.

Doos.

What backlash threat, all of Africa was helped by Gadaffi, still you old fools stood and watched, what were you gonna do... here you cant even take back your own land, stop lying and go retire in peace TMFoundation_

Is RSA afraid of England now that it seems push for land expropriation without compensation has lost energy.

And here I was thinking that Mbeki had an above the average IQ for African people. With this kind of reasoning no wonder a total moron like Zuma replaced him as President.

If History could be rewritten would they have still gone the “ quiet diplomacy “ route...? I doubt it and so do the 5 Million Zimbabweans living in South Africa now...sending money and basic food back to Zim every month. 🆘

His statement that 'no single Zimbabwean wanted Mugabe deposed' is clear lies and unfortunate for a man of his figure. Zimbabweans voted for Tsvangirai in 2008 because they simply wanted Mugabe DEPOSED!

It's pity that we will remember his last walks on earth...

It's unfortunate that even reporters don't talk about Matebeleland atrocities he did. Worse Mugabe hated MK because they were in alliance with ZAPU/ZPRA. After Independence Mugabe literally closed the Passage to SA avoiding SA liberation becse they of ZPRA.

🙏🏽 for that perspective TM!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Please! Sit down and shut up TMFoundation_ leadership failure

I never thought I would say this, but I am bitterly disappointed in Pres Mbeki. What nonsense he speaks. What 'massive contribution did Mugabe make to the liberation of SA' other than to send millions of his people into SA for work and food after he destroyed their country?

And JG Zuma is filming reality show.

He contributed while destroying his own country. Amazing how african leaders protect failures of this continent. People are running away from the AU monsters including Mugabe. They are going to the colonizers.

Now I understand why Mbeki covered up the stolen elections in Zim back then. He was so loyal to Mugabe that he took his side over what the people of Zimbabwe had chosen. These leaders are a mafia.

I know the world had high hopes that Mugabe would rise above the African Big Man stereotype, but hasn't everything he's done since then destroyed the illusion? Isn't it time to move on?

A glowing tribute to what Zimbabwe is fuc*ed.He did what his wife stole like shi*. Please man.

Ndabaningi Sithole's cadres were trained in China. I thought my former president was going to mention this. It was wrong for president Kaunda to force zanu to close shop and join zapu structures.

We all know someone else wrote the speech and he is just forced to read it. Mbeki is not stupid.

Disgusting

But went on to repress hos own people and the reason why Zimbabweans are all over the world. A liberator who turned a dictator.
