DA leader John Steenhuisen and his Freedom Front Plus counterpart Pieter Groenewald have rejected President Cyril Ramaphosa’s appointment of minister in the presidency Mondli Gungubele as political head of the State Security Agency.

Ramaphosa, after moving the agency to his office last year after the disbandment of the department of state security, announced early on Monday that Gungubele would assume political responsibility for spooks, deputised by Zizi Kodwa. Steenhuisen called for an overhaul of the accountability model of intelligence, saying there was too much secrecy which opened it up for abuse by dominant factions of the governing party.

“Mr Gungubele is a close ally of the president and is located in the presidency. There is going to be lack of faith and trust. Mr Gungubele is an honourable man but I think it is an unhealthy development that the agency is located in the presidency under the minister in the presidency,” said Steenhuisen.
