Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Kabelo Mahlasela and one-time Orlando Pirates rising star Yusuf Maart were deemed surplus to requirements by the premier division clubs, but they are now on the brink of a spectacular return to the elite league.
Mahlasela was released by Chiefs last year. His pain was further compounded by Polokwane City’s relegation, for whom he was initially playing on loan. He signed for Royal AM in October. The attacking midfielder, with 22 appearances and six goals to his name, scored in his team’s 2-1 win over TS Sporting last weekend as Royal AM dislodged Richards Bay from the top of the log.
Looking ahead to the penultimate round of the first division this afternoon, he said: “We definitely need maximum points. We are at a stage of the season where even one point won’t be enough if we’re to boost our chances for automatic promotion.”When Sekhukhune United unveiled new players prior to the start of the season, little attention was paid to Maart, but he turned into one of the stars of the team’s debut campaign.
For those who have followed Maart, his technique on the ball and his awareness are just some of his key attributes as a player. He can be deployed as either No 6, 8 or 10, and these are the options he has offered Sekhukhune coach McDonald Makhubedu this season. “I really made sacrifices to make a fresh start and I am grateful for the opportunity that Sekhukhune gave me. We want to make history with this club.”
