Bouteflika passed away on Friday aged 84, having lived as a recluse since he was forced from power more than two years ago.

ALGIERS - A funeral began in Algeria on Sunday for Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the North African country's longest-serving president, at a cemetery for its independence heroes but without the honours accorded to leaders who died before him.

An armoured vehicle towed the flag-draped coffin on a gun carriage adorned with flowers, and escorted by lines of police on motorcycles. Only journalists from Algerian national public media have been given access to the ceremony itself, and the official mourning period will last just three days instead of eight.

Isabelle Werenfels, a Maghreb specialist with German institute SWP, told AFP the country's leaders are likely nervous "because there is a lot of hatred on social media surrounding the figure of Bouteflika". Instead, "the institutions of the state have never been so weakened, so divided or so discredited," she said.

Algeria was largely spared the uprisings that swept the Arab world in 2011, something many credited to memories of the civil war and a boost in state handouts.

Action can dignify this tribute to Babita Deokaran, and whistleblowers everywhere - The Mail & GuardianIt wasn’t long after Holomisa’s expulsion that the ANC sold its soul to the arms dealers by accepting bribes and funding for the ANC’s election campaign in the 1999 general election. 1/ The article misses two points. • The 'inflection' when the ANC took the low road was in 1949 when, just after Gandhi gained Indian independence lawfully, it adopted - understandably as it was - the 'Programme of Action' to act outside the Law. .../2 Sellouts in one picture! After the initial scurry to find the killers, investigation has petered out. Cos, there has never been any intention to reveal the master vermin.
