Work-from-home – just because it’s possible doesn’t always mean it’s preferable

I’m midway through a virtual briefing when a dogfight breaks out. I can’t see the mayhem, but I can hear the owner screaming at his pets to stop.

When we first went into lockdown, working from home was, for some, a novel concept. I’m sure the novelty has fast worn off, especially for parents who have had to try to appear professional on back-to-back Zoom meetings while doubling up as caregivers, home-school teachers and, occasionally, dogfight referees.

The interviews themselves are okay, but the funny moments in between or the presenter’s comments to camera don’t receive the live audience response and so they fall flat. It’s like eating your favourite meal when it’s missing an ingredient – you will notice. So while the talk show hosts dig deep and use all their skills to appear more animated and engaging, it still is like a stand-up comedian delivering punchlines to an empty room.

Live sports is another industry desperately hoping to get back to normal. It’s not just the eye-watering monetary value of live sporting events; we as humans crave a passionate and collective experience that feeds adrenaline to not only the fans watching but also the athletes performing. When we first went into lockdown, working from home was, for some, a novel concept. It worked, sort of.
