Ronald Lamola also confirmed that more 50,000 offenders, including 14,000 inmates, will be considered for pardons and remissions by President Cyril Ramaphosa to mark Reconciliation Day.

PRETORIA - Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said he would reach out to authorities in Dubai this week to discuss the extradition of the Gutpa brothers.

Lamola also confirmed that more 50,000 offenders, including 14,000 inmates, will be considered for pardons and remissions by President Cyril Ramaphosa to mark Reconciliation Day. Lamola said the pardons and remissions that will be carried out over the next year are expected to relieve overcrowding in prisons. The minister said this is an indication that the correctional service system is effective and many offenders who are forgiven go on to become valuable members of society.

However, among those who still have to face the music are the Gutpa brothers and Lamola will use this week’s United Nationals justice conference in Dubai to close in on them. "There are still national instruments that allow law enforcement agencies to cooperate. They must still use those channels to do their jobs."
