Text messages advising 'comrades' not to wear ANC regalia so they would not be identified during the unrest circulated in July, said S’bu Zikode of shack dwellers' movement Abahlali baseMjondolo.

. It is our understanding she had very close ties to [Zuma]. That’s when things began to go wrong with the forces of one faction. Those aligned to [Zuma], one way or the other, had to stand in solidarity with the former president.

“If they were successful in defending the former president and [keeping him out of jail], the first thing they should do is to make sure his key people, like the former mayor, does not lose power within the ruling power and the city. “That that faction failed and the mayor found herself expelled from the position meant [Zuma] would be vulnerable. It means his allies are no longer strong.

“So we have been reading things through that political perspective of what is happening within the ruling party. We could also read from the text messages that we had. People were saying, 'Comrade, let us not use the regalia of the ANC because we will be easily identified.'”S’bu Zikode, Abahlali baseMjondolo“It is very clear on these messages what the issues are and what the aim is. It's clear that the target is active key economic areas.

There was always a reason why the MYANC administration was restrained in releasing the police to fulfill their duties and stopping the July unrest. There is no doubt the majority of looters were/ are MYANC supporters, who knew they would be allowed to get away with mass looting
