It adds: “Contrary to what one would expect in the face of such a large decline in employment, the number of unemployed persons declined substantially as well – by 2.8 million – to 4.3 million compared with the first quarter on 2020.” The rate in the expanded definition of unemployment increased from 39.7% in the first quarter of 2020 to 42% in the second quarter. These are individuals who are not employed; are not actively seeking employment because they are discouraged from looking for work; or did not look for work for other reasons other than discouragement.

SA lost 2.2-million jobs in second quarter of 2020Despite the dramatic fall in the number of working people, SA’s unemployment rate fell to 23.3% in the second quarter of 2020 I might not be educated but this doesn't sound right. 2,2 million people lose their jobs, but instead of increasing, the unemployment decreases? Did these people get new jobs or maybe we'll count them next time, right now we act as if they are still working?
