This is no time for complacency as the sharp spike in positive cases of the Covid-19 Coronnavirus in the Western Cape is an early indication of what we may see in the rest of the country. — Professor Salim Abdool Karim

This was according to Professor Salim Abdool Karim, chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee, who spoke during a briefing with Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize on Friday night.

But in the Western Cape, which is leading the country in the number of Covid-19 infections at 18 906 and the deaths at 437, the cases are doubling every nine days. He explained why the province had seen this surge in cases, saying that at the latter part of level 5 lockdown, the Western Cape had workplace cluster outbreaks involving customers and staff at supermarkets, factories and malls. The infected people then went on to infect their families and spread the virus in communities as well leading to “super spreader” events in the province.

“This problem began in the first week of this month when demand exceeded supply. Through a global shortage of extraction and throughput kits [GeneXpert tests and Roche Cobas] which are in demand because of the number of tests that can be done in a day through them.
