On Tuesday, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Barbara Creecy published the draft policy in the Government Gazette. The public has until October 18 to submit comment.

The panel's 580-page report highlights a crucial shift towards prioritising the protection of iconic wildlife over commercial exploitation.

The draft policy outlines three conservation and sustainable objectives aimed at enhancing species management and three international commercial trade-related objectives: Export of species: To encourage the live export of the five species exclusively to range states or other suitable and acceptable destinations within Africa that offer suitable habitats.

The consideration of international commercial trade in elephant ivory will also depend on favourable conditions. about the policy's alignment with colonial arguments and its potential to maintain the status quo.
