on Wednesday insisted in testimony to the Zondo commission that if the looting of parastatals by allies of the Gutpa family reached its apogee during his tenure, it was a coincidence.
Gigaba took umbrage at the question, prompting Deputy Chief Justice Zondo to say that it was an invitation to consider his responsibilities as a cabinet minister and the extent to which his role would have allowed him to hear alarm bells ring. Zondo asked in particular whether the minister, or the executives of state-owned entities like Eskom and Transnet were not given reports that would have alerted them that something was amiss.
“To the extent that this happened, which is being referred to as a looting exercise of this magnitude, the reports that were coming to me, would not have indicated this … It would not bring out the issues that relate to this alleged R57-billion.” “The information that comes to the minister is limited; you rely on the people who are running the institution, the entities, doing what they have to do and doing it in the correct manner. You don’t get yourself involved in these contracts and, therefore, you would not know or be briefed, unless you are really lucky to be briefed about money which is being laundered,” Gigaba said.

Gigaba denies involvement in looting of SOEs, ’purely coincidence’ it happened during his tenureFormer Public Enterprises and Finance minister Malusi Gigaba and his legal team avoided answering a question on whether he had accepted cash payments and where he got the cash from. In this case the truth will not set him free but instead see him in jail. Gupta parasite. Coincidence? One could be at the helm and not know what happens under his watch? Like, with one's eyes wide open? Or being blind-folded? So: if this logic holds and goes for him, can anybody at the helm anywhere wash his hands of looting on this level saying it was coincidence?
