Gauteng premier David Makhura on Thursday said the province would make submissions to the national coronavirus command council to reintroduce stringent measures to try slow the spread of Covid-19, including an intermittent lockdown.

The province has to date recorded 45,944 infections, 12,957 recoveries and 244 deaths. Of the confirmed cases, 687 are within the department of education - with 428 teachers and 184 pupils having tested positive for the virus, with 589 schools affected and 71 forced to close.

“If conducted on a grade basis, all learners in each class are split into two and will be expected to attend school on alternate days. Teacher unions were reportedly requesting for a revised, slower approach for the resumption of pupils to allow for the school system to adjust.
