Transport minister Fikile Mbalula will appeal last week’s high court ruling that put the brakes on the controversial Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act and its driving licence points-demerit system.

Denis Droppa

The judge found in favour of civil rights action group Outa, which challenged Aarto’s constitutional validity. Outa and the AA have criticised Aarto for being geared towards revenue collection instead of promoting road safety, with the AA saying it was a waste of taxpayers’ money which had done nothing to remedy SA's shocking road death rate.

“This is before parliament, and we believe this is an important element in our efforts to arrest the scourge of fatalities on our roads,” he said. In the 42 day Arrive Alive campaign from December 1 to January 11, traffic officers conducted 651 roadblocks throughout the country and issued 264,690 fines for traffic offences. Of these, 21,431 were for drivers who failed to wear seatbelts while 22,766 were for people driving without licences.

Mbalula blames theft for dilapidated train stations, as ActionSA calls for heightened security measuresMbalula said train stations requiring minor and extensive repairs will be upgraded as part of the National Station Improvement Programme. What happened to the security staff that used to look after the stations? He’s lying. They took them away. This is how they privatize the rail system by making it dysfunctional so their ‘private’ friends can take it over. Thank you Captain Obvious🤦‍♂️ like we don't know it's due to theft you suppose to prevent this. Isn't that why the apartheid government had railway police, you anc got rid of them
